Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip Replacement Surgery in India, Hip joint consist of two major elements of skeletal system called femoral head which is upper part of the femoral bone and acetabulum of the pelvis. The Hip joint is a ball and socket joint. Ball is head of femur and socket is acetabulum which is a part of the pelvis.
Total hip replacement surgery is done to replace the head of femur and modify the socket of the pelvic bone to hold the head of the femur bone. The goal is to achieve pain relief and improve the function of the hip joint. Surgery for total hip replacement involve replacement of femoral bone head and acetabulum with artificial components. Femoral head is replaced with artificial components. Femoral head is replaced with metal shaft and the acetabulum is re-structured with a hollow metal prosthesis. Before the surgery the patient receive intravenous fluid and prophylactic anti-biotic. Surgery is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia. The surgeon will make a small skin incision on the hip joint and then carefully separate muscles and ligaments to access the hip joint. Once the joint is exposed the surgeon will dislocate the joint and remove the femoral head from acetabulum. Damaged cartilage within the acetabulum will be removed and discarded. Inner hollow surface of acetabulum will be re-shaped to hold the acetabulum which is made up of metal prosthesis.
The surgeon carefully secures the acetabulum prosthesis into the socket using special cement or screw. Femoral head is excised on shaft of the femoral base prosthesis. Stem consists of the metal ball and metal shaft is poised into the distal femur bone and severed by using cement or adhesive. Once the acetabulum component and femoral component are in fully place a check is done to see the movement and stability of the hip joint. X- Ray is used to verify if this joint is properly positioned or not.
Hip Replacement Surgery Procedure
Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a doctor surgically removes a painful hip joint with arthritis and replaces it with an artificial joint often made from metal and plastic components. It usually is done when all other treatment options have failed to provide adequate pain relief. The procedure should relieve a painful hip joint, making walking easier.
Hip replacement surgery can be performed traditionally or by using what is considered a minimally-invasive technique. The main difference between the two procedures is the size of the incision. During standard hip replacement surgery, you are given general anaesthesia to relax your muscles and put you into a temporary deep sleep. This will prevent you from feeling any pain during the surgery or have any awareness of the procedure. A spinal aesthetic may be given to help prevent pain as an alternative.
While most hip replacement surgeries today are performed using the standard technique (one 8 to 10 inch cut along the side of the hip), in recent years, some doctors have been using a minimally-invasive technique. In the minimally-invasive approach, doctors make one to two cuts from 2 to 5 inches long. The same procedure is performed through these small cuts as with standard hip replacement surgery. The small cuts are thought to lessen blood loss, ease pain following surgery, shorten hospital stays, reduce scar appearance, and speed healing.
Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement in Delhi
The name itself tells that during this procedure a small incision is made which may range from 3-6 inch which is significantly smaller than those made during other total hip replacement surgeries. During the Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, the doctor will ask you to lie on the bed on a specialised table enabling the surgeon to perform this minimally invasive hip replacement surgery/operation. Your feet will be placed in the boots attached to the table. Allowing your surgeon to position your leg as necessary to gain access to your hip replacement surgery. A Fluoroscopy machine may be used during the procedure to help your surgeon position your prosthesis more accurately. Your surgeon will began by making a small incision near your groin and continue with the hip replacement surgery performed on the acetabulum of the pelvis and femur head by introducing metal prosthesis.
Hip Resurfacing Specialist Doctors & Hospital in India
Total hip replacement is a safe and effective surgery which requires the removal of the femoral head and the insertion of the hip stem down the shaft into the femur. Hip resurfacing on the other hand preserves the femoral head and the femoral neck unlike in total hip replacement surgery. During the procedure for hip resurfacing your surgeon will only remove a few centimetres of the bone around the femoral head shaping it to fit tightly inside the hip resurfacing implant. Also, the socket which constitute of the acetabulum present near the pelvis is prepared by the surgeon for the middle cap that will form the socket portion of the ball and socket joint. While the resurfacing components slides over the top of the femoral head like a tooth cap. The acetabular component is pressed into a place much like a total hip replacement component would be.
Hip Replacement Estimated Cost in India
Hip replacement surgery is a surgical procedure that involves surgery on femoral head and acetabulum portion of the pelvis, and the hip joint is replaced by metal prosthesis implant. It can be total hip replacement or semi/half hip replacement. The surgery is recommended to the patients who are suffering from severe pain, decreased mobility, and deformity at the joint due to injury, tumour, and arthritis and also due to bone loss. There are various factors which makes the hip replacement price variable from patient to patient. Some of the factors are mentioned below
- The Material used for the metal prosthesis.
- Type of hospital, stay, and accommodation
- Pre-existing health conditions and age of the patient
Hip Replacement Cost in India (Approx.)
|Country||Hip Replacement Cost Approx.|
|New Zealand||Approx. 15000$-18000$|
|South Africa||Approx. 8500$-14000$|
However the approximate cost of the single hip replacement surgery is around 2-3 lakh, and for both the hips and bilateral hip replacement surgery cost double ranging from 4-6 lakh.
What Happens After Hip Replacement Surgery?
You will likely stay in the hospital for four to six days and may have to stay in bed with a wedge-shaped cushion between your legs to keep the new hip joint in place. A drainage tube will likely be placed in your bladder to help you go to the bathroom. Physical therapy usually begins the day after surgery and within days you can walk with a walker, crutches, or a cane. You will continue physical therapy for weeks to months following the surgery
How Long Will My New Joint Last After Hip Replacement Surgery?
When hip replacement surgeries were first performed in the early 1970’s, it was thought that the average artificial joint would last approximately 10 years. We now know that about 85% of the hip joint implants will last 20 years. Improvements in surgical technique and artificial joint materials should make these implants last even longer. If the joint does become damaged, surgery to repair it can be successful but is more complicated than the original procedure.
